Kahana Feld Obtains Complete Defense Verdict After Two-Week Jury Trial

Kahana Feld partner John Ranucci and attorney Matthew Brenner secured a complete defense verdict following a two-week jury trial in Sacramento County.

The KF defense team successfully defended a premises liability action involving allegations that a truncated dome mat at Sacramento International Airport constituted a dangerous condition. The plaintiff alleged he was seriously injured when he slipped while walking from the rental counter area to his assigned vehicle. The defense maintained that the evidence did not establish a dangerous condition for the plaintiff, and the plaintiff could not prove they had actual or constructive notice of any hazardous condition.

After a two-week trial, the jury returned a defense verdict following approximately two hours of deliberation, finding in favor of both defendants. The result was especially significant given the plaintiff’s claimed ongoing limitations, stipulated past medical expenses, and request for substantial additional damages. The verdict reflects a successful defense of a heavily contested premises liability case involving nuanced issues of notice, causation, and the distinction between a trivial defect and an actionable dangerous condition.
